Community organizations are working with people whose needs, experiences, and ways of engaging can vary significantly, even within the same program. Effective programming requires flexibility, collaboration, and a willingness to respond to the people being served. It means understanding the community, recognizing what is working, identifying what needs to change, and adjusting along the way.
reachAbility’s partnership with BGC Greater Halifax Clubs to deliver our Building Emotional Resilience in Youth program demonstrates this approach in practice. The program helps youth explore emotional awareness, regulation, communication, accountability, needs, and the difference between reacting and responding through discussion and activities.
One of the program’s successes has been youth engagement. Participants contribute to discussions, take part in activities, and provide feedback about what they are learning and experiencing. BGC staff feedback adds another perspective, helping reachAbility understand what is connecting and where the program can be strengthened.
At the same time, community programming comes with challenges. One has been working with different age groups. Youth at different developmental stages may respond differently to the same topic, activity, or discussion style, so an approach that engages one group may need to be adjusted for another. Rather than treating these differences as barriers, we use them to shape delivery.
We adjust discussions, examples, activities, and presentation based on each group’s needs and engagement while maintaining the program’s purpose. This ability to adapt is central to reachAbility’s community work. Strong programming is defined not by avoiding challenges, but by how an organization responds to them.
The BGC partnership demonstrates why collaborative relationships matter. BGC brings relationships and community knowledge, while reachAbility brings specialized programming, facilitation experience, and adaptability. Our partnerships are built through delivering, listening, learning, and adjusting. In this way, resilience is not only something we teach. It is something we practice with our community partners.
