When people talk about helping newcomers succeed in Canada, two words often get used interchangeably: community and networking. But they’re not the same, and understanding the difference matters.
Community is about belonging:
It meets a deeply human need, to feel seen, supported, and understood. For newcomers, community can mean finding people who share your language, culture, or lived experience. It’s where you can show up as yourself without explanation. Community provides emotional safety, friendship, and a sense of home, especially in moments when everything else feels unfamiliar.
Networking is about growth:
Networking serves a different purpose, helping you move forward. It connects newcomers to opportunities, information, and professional pathways. It’s how you learn about industries, find mentors, and open doors that might otherwise stay closed. While community says, “You belong here,” networking says, “Here’s how you can grow here.”
The Challenge:
Many newcomers are encouraged to “network” before they’ve had a chance to build community. But without that foundation of belonging, networking can feel transactional, exhausting, or even isolating.
The truth is – we need both.
Community gives newcomers the confidence and stability to take risks. Networking turns that confidence into momentum and opportunity. One nurtures the person, the other advances the path.
This is why the reachAbility team is developing ERIN (Emotional Regulation In Newcomers), a program designed to support the emotional and social foundations that often go overlooked. By strengthening emotional resilience and fostering a sense of belonging first, we aim to better prepare newcomers to engage confidently in networking and professional growth opportunities.
If we want to truly support newcomers, we should stop treating these as interchangeable, and start building spaces that intentionally foster both.
Because success in a new country isn’t just about who you know. It’s also about where, and with whom, you feel at home.
