Bringing One Step Closer One Step Closer to You

At reachAbility, we believe that opportunity should never depend on where someone happens to be in their life. That belief is at the heart of why we’re taking our One Step Closer Program on the road to Atlantic Community Shelters Society locations across the HRM.

Too often, systems are designed with the expectation that people will find their way to services on their own. Our experience tells us something different: real impact happens when we meet people where they are in their journey toward stability. For individuals navigating housing insecurity, mobility challenges and systemic barriers, access can be the biggest obstacle of all. When faced with multiple immediate needs not being sufficiently met, finding any time to search out resources for self-growth and future success can seem impossible.

Bringing One Step Closer directly into shelters and tiny-home communities allows us to remove that obstacle. It creates space for meaningful conversations, trust-building, and practical next steps – without requiring people to navigate yet another system on their own.

Importantly, our approach is not about telling people what they should do. We don’t lecture, prescribe, or assume a one-size-fits-all path forward. Instead, we focus on connection and access. We prioritise sharing information, opening doors, building confidence and supporting individuals as they define their own goals and pace.

One Step Closer is exactly what the name suggests: a starting point. A way to connect people to resources, opportunities, and supports that already exist, but may feel out of reach. By bringing the program into shelters across HRM, we’re reinforcing a simple truth: progress becomes possible when services move closer to the people they’re meant to serve.
