Your Children Are Grown. What Now for You?

We made it through sleepless nights, tears, cuts & scrapes, laughter, and the bittersweet satisfaction of watching our children create their own lives. Now, we stand at a new crossroads—one where we remind ourselves that there is more to us than parent. We are individuals with ideas, hopes, and goals for ourselves. This is our time to explore new opportunities and find out what works for us. No matter what decade of life we are in, this is the perfect moment to embrace new beginnings.

That was me. I was a stay-at-home mom with a side gig leading group fitness classes. But there came a point when I wanted to do something just for myself. So, I took courses, updated my resume and cover letter, and began applying for jobs. I can’t count the number of resumes I submitted and received the standard, “We deeply appreciate you taking the time to reach out to us however…” The process was daunting and, at times discouraging, so I would take breaks from submitting applications.

Something simple that worked for me, as a reminder of my self-worth and value, was changing the wallpaper on my computer. Let me explain. My computer is where I searched for jobs, where I applied, where I updated my resume and tweaked cover letters. So, I pulled a picture from my photos of me at my happy place, wrote “Why not you!” on the photo, and made it my wallpaper. When I opened my laptop each morning there was a happy, confident person who knew she had a lot to offer to the right organization smiling back at me.

Eventually, I found reachAbility, and a position that was a perfect fit for me. It would have been so much easier if I had known about this organization when I first started my journey, which is why I felt compelled to write this article. It’s important for you to know that your journey can be supported from the very first day of your decision to take a new step. While my own journey was ultimately successful, it would have been much shorter, and so much less stressful, if I hadn’t been undertaking it on my own.

reachAbility offers FREE self-management and employment programs that provide support and guidance tailored to your needs. If you’re ready to jump straight into employment, that’s great! If you need some direction first, a facilitator will meet with you to understand your goals and work with you to determine the best next step. Our classes are small and welcoming, allowing you to connect with others on a similar journey. The result? Engaging discussions, shared ideas, meaningful learning experiences, and help finding that “perfect fit” job for you.

As I wrap up this letter to you, my hope is that you take that first step toward something new and fulfilling—whatever that may look like for you. And remember, we are always here to help you navigate your new path.

I hope to see you soon!
