In an effort to reach out to a broader number of particpants, The One Step Closer program will deliver in-community programming, eliminating the need for clients in outlying areas of HRM to travel to reachAbility’s central office in peninsular Halifax.
Aspiring to reach more than 100 individuals over its program year, reachAbility is able to assist a greatere number of persons with disabilities. To facilitate this process, the program will deliver its modules over a two-week period of time, working with participants for a total of ten days to deliver two popular, in-house reachAbility programs, ASSET and SYCLE. With the assistance of DCS staff, the OSCP will identify and secure local community centres, meeting halls, schools and other locations considered to be appropriate learning environments.
Participants will tackle a variety of topics including:
- Stress and anger management.
- Conflict resolution.
- Workplace dynamics and ethics.
- Healthy lifestyle choices and habits.
- Mental health and emotional stability.
- Positive and assertive interpersonal communication.
- Self-esteem, self-confidence and self-efficacy.
- Personality, values, motivation and attitudes.
- Goal setting and planning.
- Interviewing and understanding employer expectations.
- Team dynamics.
Mastery of these subjects has been identified with success in accessing and maintaining employment and positive reports of job satisfaction. The program intends to create and maintain an atmosphere of open dialogue and communication that encourages the sharing of information between participants, their caseworkers and program staff. With a process of collective and transparent consultation, participants will be challenged to learn, laugh and grow in a supportive context that recognizes their unique attributes, talents and gifts.
At the conclusion of the two-week intervention, participants will have gained increased self-confidence and self-efficacy in relate to their work-based skills, as well as improvements in their capacity to effectively communicate and manage work-based conflict. Through the reduction of these and other barriers to employment, the OSCP is committed to fostering participant development that enables meaningful employment experiences and personal growth.

How Do I Get Involved?
If an individual is already associated with a case management agency, then they can speak directly to their case manager about referral to One Step Closer.
If an individual is not already case managed, but wishes to participate in a particular program, they can contact reachAbility anytime for contact numbers for a case management agencies or questions regarding the referral process.
